HUMANE EDUCATION AND NETWORK PARTNERS FOR ANIMALS PROGRAMS
One of the most important goals of Spring Farm CARES is education. Besides the many individual and group tours of the farm itself, and of the nature sanctuary, we also do a number of public speaking engagements to bring a piece of the farm out to the public. Societal change is not something we can do alone. We know the world literally changes one heart at a time, but we also know that we need to network and reach out to those many hearts seeking the same goals.
Over the years, we have watched as animal care and welfare organizations, all who are trying to do the same work, to affect the same outcome, were competing and squabbling with one another. This seemed like such a waste of valuable energy to us. After all, we have our differences, but we also have so much that we share in common. We sought to find that common ground with a hope that we could reach out, join hands, give up old battles, heal old wounds, and move forward united. Our Network Partners for Animals Program was born.
Equally as important in making changes in the world, is the education of our children. Humane Education is actually mandated in our NYS schools, yet many schools fail to provide such programs. Our Humane Education Program is completely tailored for children grades K-12. Our program reaches thousands of children each year, many of them coming to the farm on field trips. Many topics are covered in these programs, including bite prevention, proper care of animals, spay and neutering, as well as safety and handling issues.
We also try to be a resource of information on many other animal and environmental topics. One such topic that was really highlighted in 2007 is in the area of pet nutrition. The massive pet food recall underscored the need for people to educate themselves as much as possible about what is in the food we feed our animal friends.
